It all started in Messina, Sicily, in 1937 from nonno Salvatore who said: ''If you want to be rich, don't make gelato''.

The De Luca family represents a classic success story but one still not known to the broad mass of Australians, even though there have been countless magazine articles about them both here and abroad.
It seems to me those are the ingredients that have made the De Luca family the great migrant success story that they are and why their business is a model which, more than anything, is now giving back to the nation which accepted them and gave them opportunity twenty years ago.
Like it was for all of us migrants, the first years were very difficult for Luigi De Luca. He had to find whatver employemnt he could, given that he didn’t have the experience or qualifications for many jobs that were on offer and that there were very few jobs within his field of expertise. Yet he had a dream to establish a Gelateria and to establish it in the heart of “Little Italy”, Norton Street, Leichhardt.
He was even successful in exporting this “Australian gelato” to Italy.
And that must be the ultimate measure of success! For a migrant to produce and export back to the home country the very product that he or she used to make
at home must be the pinnacle of pride and satisfaction.
But that was not enough for Luigi and his family. They wanted to help others do what they had done.
Typical of his dedication to the enjoyment of good food Luigi conducts classes and teaches his secrets to anyone who wants to learn.
It’s people like Luigi and his family who have totally transformed this country in less than fifty years.
